There have been many times over the years when I've heard or been confronted with some heartbreaking news ... a tragedy reported on the television, a story shared online, or an event that I find leaves me sitting in a sort of shattered silence .. wondering how something so difficult could happen. As a sensitive I have difficult moments .
I try to stay away from sensational news.
When these moments creep up, I've often felt completely helpless. Because, it feels as if there is nothing I can do to fix or alter the event, there is nothing I can say .. and literally nothing I can practically , feeling my heart and stomach tighten .and I realised that instead of simply carrying that sadness and heaviness with me, I could pause for a moment, place a hand on my heart, and quietly offer a Loving Kindness blessing.
It was a very simple gesture: , a silent wish that those involved might find strength and be surrounded by love and support. That, somehow, they might know peace amidst their suffering. And, I continued to return to that blessing over the days that followed. Whenever I am on the road and starting my day, my practice is to send a compassionate blessing to all those who are struggling.
I know that it doesn’t change what is happening but this practice reminds me that compassion and kindness do not always need to be expressed through action.
Sometimes compassion is simply a willingness to pause, to acknowledge another person's suffering, and to hold them in our hearts with kindness no matter where they are in the world.
I still find myself holding onto this practice;
Here is something you can say :
May you be safe. My you be supported. May you be loved.
A small ritual of compassion and kindness.
